How to: Pack light

I travel a lot. A lot a lot. Usually, I'm of the opinion that I should just pack what I want, and therefore as much as I want, especially if I have a checked bag. In the last two years, thanks to flying to see my boyfriend every few weeks, I've become a packing light guru. Call me stingey, but paying extra for checked luggage for a weekend away just feels like a waste of money. Part of it is about adapting and working out ways to minimise luggage (Law textbooks? So many of them, but HELLO iPad! Genius!), but part of it is also being really strict with yourself and planning ahead for (almost) every eventuality.

This week, I'm popping over to Brussels for two nights and I'm just taking a small backpack that will double as my handbag for two days of wandering around eating moules frites and waffles, gobble gobble! So, here are my tips for packing light, which also doubles as a 'What I'm taking to Brussels' post - look at me go!

Downsize your washbag. Pretty washbags are, well, pretty! But they aren't practical if packing light is the aim. I use a ziplock bag instead. Be strict with yourself - will you really be plucking your eyebrows on the trip? Do you really need a facemask? Is it really necessary to bring that massive bottle of perfume just because it's your favourite? Mini products are IDEAL in situations like this. Go and have a proper nosey in your local drugstore, but don't forget the little travel empties either. They're perfect when you just HAVE to bring your favourite micellar water but it's in a massive bottle. Just a warning though: Wrap the lid of the bottles with tape to avoid leaks - the bottles I have from boots have been known to leak argh!

This is where all those beauty testers come in handy!

Makeup essentials only - emphasis on 'essentials'. I don't wear much makeup as it is, but I find it really difficult to not bring loads of makeup with me 'just in case'. Just in case what, though? Exactly. Chances are, you're going to be so busy having the time of your life, your choice of mascara is not going to be something that bothers you a whole lot. And as for that bright red lipstick you've had for ages but never worn - put it back. Just put it back, trust me!

Products that have their own brush or applicator are perfect! Or of course that mini brush set you've had stashed away.

Plan your outfits like a pro. I love love LOVE bringing loads of clothes with me when I travel. It makes me feel more comfortable, but the trouble is I end up not wearing even half of what I thought I couldn't live without. So when I don't have the luxury of having a checked bag, I am much stricter with myself. Think realistically about what you're going to wear, based on likely weather and what you'll be getting up to. Layering is perfect, especially if the weather is unpredictable wherever you're going, and you'll thank yourself for packing a compact umbrella. Nothing worse than being soggy in an unknown place. And always pack your most travelling-light-friendly bikini. That's the one exception to the rule here.

Day 1 aaaannnddd....

....Day 2! See what I did there??

No, you don't need all your chargers, cables and 4 different cameras. Unless you're a pro photographer, obvs. Be realistic - kindles have reallyyyyyy long battery lives. Real books have endless battery life, even better! A lot of cables and plugs are separate these days, so you can get away with bringing one plug and just the cables you need. Only bring your laptop if you absolutely have to. Short trips are for immersing yourself in a new place and leaving the interwebs behind. If something comes up and you have to use a computer, internet cafes still exist, believe it or not!

I really hope this post has been helpful! If you have any questions just leave a comment and I'll get back to you. And don't forget to check back next Monday to hear all about my trip!

Brand Crush - Jen's Pirate Booty - Spring 15

So I'd heard of Jen's Pirate Booty before, but I'd always considered it an American brand and therefore not a brand to get to know too well as I didn't really know where to buy it in the UK. A forbidden love, if you will. Until ASOS saved the day and started stocking it that is! The pieces immediately caught my attention, and now that I can get my mitts on them I feel like I can fall head over heels in love with the gorgeous-ness of it all.

Enjoy their Spring 15 Lookbook below, and check out my favourite pieces available at ASOS at the bottom.

Barry M Mermaid Nail Polish

I love wearing nail polish, but I tend to go through phases of painting them every week and then not painting them at all for weeks! I've acquired a lot, and I mean A LOT, of nail polishes over the years, but there are actually only a few that I really use. I'm a stickler for glitter polish, so I was so excited when I spotted a mermaid-esque polish in the Barry M collection. I had to have it! And it didn't disappoint.

I used a slightly metallic blue polish as a kind of base coat which worked out really well. I'm not sure what other colour I'd wear underneath as the blue really seemed to bring out the colours of the glitter polish and completed the mermaid look perfectly.

Ohhhh so pretty!

Buy it at Barry M, Superdrug, Boots and Amazon!

Do you like glitter polish or are you a more traditional polish kinda gal?

I thought I'd share my favourite Coachella outfits from the last few years, and offer some suggestions based on what's in stores right now. #CurvesInBikinis

Today, I came across a fabulous campaign by swimsuit shop Swimsuits For All called Curves in Bikinis. The campaign features the gorgeous Ashley Graham, who became the first plus-sized model to grace the pages of Sports Illustrated when the campaign was published in the magazine's iconic swimsuit issue this month . The campaign aims to encourage women to feel body-confident in a bikini, no matter what their body shape. Although I find the campaign name rather shape-specific, I'm going to go ahead and say that, really, it applies to all body shapes. What great inspiration to grab your favourite bikini (or buy that new one you've been eyeing up) and get to the nearest beach or pool!

In honour of #CurvesInBikinis, here are my favourite bikinis that are available at the moment. Watch this space for the next swimwear post when the Summer collections drop!

Valentine's Day with your BFF

(c) Valfre

I'm sure I don't need to remind you all that Valentine's Day is just around the corner. On the whole, I think the day itself can be massively disappointing, but I was having a think, and decided that the best way to make sure you have an amazing day is to spend it with your BFF.

So, how to make BFF Day awesome?
1. Tell your BFF that BFF Day is happening. Just as couples often fall out over V Day because they were never clear with each other about whether they were going to celebrate it or not, you will be deeply disappointed if you don't communicate with your BFF about what the plan is because hey, they aren't psychic, and neither are you.

2. Plan in advance. What time your day together will start, whether you're going to get each other gifts, what you're going to get up to... I guarantee talking about what you're going to do and where you're going to go will get you really excited about the day! Surprises are also fun though, so think of something fun or silly you could make or do to surprise your friend.

3. Make a card for your BFF. Even if you can't draw, making a card is such a special touch.

4. Plan a fun activity. Get out and experience something with your BFF. Look in to what you can do locally, maybe something neither of you have done before. How about ice-skating or an obstacle course or canoeing or a mani pedi...?

5. Document the day. Get your selfie stick/selfie timer/disposable camera at the ready and get snap happy!

And as for gifts, here are some ideas :)

Bemsy Loves: Topshop Jewelry

I usually find Topshop jewellery is a bit hit and miss, but recently it has been GREAT! I'm terrible when it comes to actually putting on jewellery in the morning, but I have a feeling that I'll want to put these beauties on and never take them off. And what's really great is that quite a few pieces are available in gold and silver, depending on what you prefer to wear!

Christmas Shopping: Gifts that Give Back

I'm fairly sure that this is going to be my favourite of the Christmas shopping ideas I'm going to share with you. This list is special because when you buy one of these gifts, you'll not only be giving a gift to a loved-one, but you'll also be giving a gift to the environment, or an animal, or a human. These gifts are fantastic for those people in your life who seem to have everything, or who don't want anything for Christmas but you still want to get them something. I think I've found a pretty great selection for you to choose from. Enjoy!

1. Toms
I'm pretty sure everybody knows about Toms, and for very good reason. For every pair of Toms sold, a child in need will receive a new pair of shoes. Having worked in Cambodia, I've seen firsthand how children long for a decent pair of shoes but have to make do with flimsy, ill-fitting plastic sandals, or no shoes at all. There are so many styles and colours of Toms shoes to choose from, so you're sure to find the perfect pair to give as a gift.

2. Wicker Wings
This is a fairly new company, but it has a similar model to Toms, but instead of shoes, this company sells bags. When you buy one of their bags, they will give a child in need a bag of inspiration. A child will receive a drawstring bag that contains a book and a little note that you can write yourself! The book and the note will be in the child's language, and are designed to inspire children to read and pursue education. Wicker Wings' bags are absolutely adorable, and you're bound to have a friend who will absolutely love to receive one as a gift.

3. Jonas Umbrellas
When you buy one of Jonas Umbrella's limited edition umbrellas, you help to fund a clean water well at a school in South Sudan or Uganda. The current limited edition umbrella features a cute bicycle print on the inside. You're bound to have a friend or relative who both loves bicycles and needs a fantastic new umbrella!

4. Oxfam Unwrapped
Oxfam Unwrapped is a great gift for someone who has everything. On their behalf, you can buy anything from a goat to an emergency toilet, mosquito nets to manure, a duck to a bicycle, and all sorts of wonderful things in between! Your friend will receive a card that you can personalize, and will be thrilled to know that someone in need has benefitted.

5. WWF Species Adoption
The World Wildlife Fund runs a fantastic scheme whereby you can adopt an endangered species on behalf of a friend (or for yourself of course!). The cost of the adoption pack goes towards protecting your chosen species from extinction. There are loads of species to choose from, so you can choose your friend's favourite animal, and your friend will receive an adoption pack that includes a cuddly toy (I have the polar bear and I love him!), an adoption card, a photo, all in a cute gift bag that can be used as a tote. This is the perfect gift for the animal lovers in your life.

6. Stone + Cloth
By buying one of Stone + Cloth's seriously cool bags, you will help to fund a scholarship for a child to get an education. So many kids aren't able to attend school, so this a great way to help to change that, while giving a friend a really useful, durable gift.

7. 100 Good Deeds
Buy your friend a 100 Good Deeds bracelet, and you'll not only be buying a bracelet made by vulnerable women in countries such as Uganda and Rwanda, allowing these women to earn a living, but the proceeds will help to support more women and girls with more training. The bracelets are gorgeous and perfect for stacking, and there are loads of colours to choose from.

So, there's my list of favourites, but of course there are loads more to choose from. Feel free to message me here if you need help for a particular friend. Will you be buying a gift that gives back this year?
